Saints’ Price gives a top performance

The Smithton coach was staggered by Rhonda Price’s 47-point performance in the Saints’ win over Penguin at home last night, but said the most pleasing thing was the centre didn’t think of herself as bigger than the team.

“She doesn’t like freelance basketball. She appreciates coaching,” Kay said.

“As a coach I want to see the ball in her hands, but to get it there you need structure and that’s what we had tonight.

“It was a team effort.”

Along with Price’s brilliance, the Saints had strong contributions from guards Jessy Price and Kristyn and Julie Kay.

The trio was pivotal in moving the ball on quickly in offence, and running its taller Penguin opponents off their feet.

Lindsay Laur was Penguin’s best with 27 points.

Kay said the win was a massive boost to Smithton’s top four aspirations.

“We had a good win over Ulverstone here at home earlier this season, but I’d say this is our best win for the season,” he said.

“Our goal is finals, if you don’t aim for finals why are you playing?

“At the moment we’re in the mix for the fourth spot, we just have to keep beating the teams around us. So far we’ve been doing it.”

The win also keeps the Saints’ hopes of reclaiming the Bianca Gourley Memorial Trophy alive, with the best of three series between the two sides squared at one-all.

In last night’s other games, a double-double (25 points and 21 rebounds) from Kylie McCauley helped Wynyard get over Ulverstone.

The Hoppers trailed by just seven points at the final break, and put up more shots over the game, but they couldn’t bring an end to the Wildcats 11-game winning streak, going down by 18 points.

In her 250th NWBU game, Erin Butler had 20 points for Latrobe in its win over Somerset, while Devonport accounted for Burnie.
